Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Corel Painter
3D Studio Max
Bryce
Flash
MS Paint
Buy/download those programs, and get comfortable with them. MS Paint should already be on your computer.
I've found, personally, that the best way to train yourself to be a better artist is through loads of practice.
Anywho. Get comfy with color concepts, the color wheel, and basic color principles. You'll be needing them to do Graphic Design.
Hi there....I am not a graphic designer but in the past couple of years I have had alot of interst in the field. Graphic design is every where and it is what can make a buisness.
In college I took two Graphic Communications courses and I learned so many different things. From the colors that you should choose, fonts, images, and how to really make important text stand out. It was fun!
The program that we used in class was Adobe Photoshop CS2. There is so much to learn with Photoshop.....it can do just about anything! I recommend this book called Graphic Designers 101.
Good Luck---i guarantee that you will learn a lot with this book!
Robin Williams is a great author for graphic design. Try "The Non-Designers Design Book" as well as her typography book. They are short, sweet, and to the point with excellent examples.
The Adobe suite several people have mentioned (photoshop, illustrator) as well as corel are standards. Experiment with different mediums as well, graphic design doesn't have to be computer only. Scan in a photograph or piece of material then use it as a jumping off point.
If you can, go to a bookstore and look for British magazines like Computer Arts. They often have design briefs listed. Try creating what the client is asking for and see if you can come up with something better than is in the magazine :) These mags also have discs included that usually have freebies and tutorials.
I will recommend u to start with basic things: painting, drawing, perspective, going to show, galleries, looking at the past like Cubism, pop art and etc...After that learn about Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Indesign, etc. If you are also interest about the printing stuff also learn about resolutions, pixels, dpi and images sizes.
Pick a program and platform you want to work with first, something easy to understand, than search their site or your local book store for an easy start manual.
