My best friends birthday is coming up and we have been dying to go to a gun range. hes turning 20 and im 19. we want to have a boys day out. we live in staten island in nyc. we do not own guns and are planning on renting. i am looking for a friendly gun range which will let us rent handguns being under 21. also one which isnt too far from home. i know of one in PA called sunset hill. but its 2 hours away. im hoping for something a little closer. AGAIN UNDER 21. we will be by ourselves. we want to shoot handguns and need to rent them. thanks

You probably would not have issue at any range. It's really a matter of the rules of the range. It would be best to actualyl call the ones nearby since most if not all of us do not live where you do.
As for finding one all you do is type 'gun range' and your zip code.
It'll come down to range rules. Check your yellowpages or local area on googlemaps for some ranges and call them to ask.
I'm 20 and I legally own a .357 magnum revolver. It sucks when I drive an hour to a range just to have them tell me that you got to be 21 to shoot handguns there. For me, it's mainly because in my state you have to be 21 to buy ammunition for handguns. Since I can't buy the ranges ammo, they don't want me shooting my gun there, even when I bring my own ammunition.
Just call ahead and ask. Some ranges are funky about letting people under 21 shoot handguns there. Most of the ranges in my area say that you have to be 18 to shoot a rifle or 21 to shoot handgun. The safest thing you can do is call a few ahead of time and explain your situation.
EDIT: By the way, it won't hurt to bring another buddy or a dad along with you two that is over 21. That may help getting into some places. Straw purchases don't apply to ammunition, so he or she can buy you guys ammo for you. I can pick up the bromance thing going on here for his birthday, but if you bring a third person over 21, there's a chance that it'll help things go smoother.
you're going to have to go out of state i think. make a fun day trip out of it, because you're not going to be able to shoot anywhere in the anti-gun mecca that is NYC, especially with your age limit. remember, you have to be 21 to buy the ammo, regardless of how old you need to be to go to the range or rent the guns there. however, ranges do sometimes do exceptions, i've never been to one that does, but i've heard of others being able to rent/buy ammo without being 21. depends on the range. i still think you're not going to have much luck in NY though, sorry bud.
