You can't really put a life expectancy on cars, without knowing how they have been maintained, and driven. So that said you could have two identical cars, one gets it's oil changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months is driven responsibly, and the other one never gets an oil change and is raced. You might get 200,000+ miles out of the first one mentioned, while the other one is dead after 50,000 miles. That said I have seen a Jeep Grand Cherokee with over 250,000 miles still going strong.
I sold my 92 Jeep Cherokee to a friend with 175K on it as a beach truck. Well it ended up being a daily driver, and he got up to 299K and someone totaled it. How sad is that.
I have had many Jeeps and they have all been wonderful. I baby them, take for synthetic oil changes and routine maintenance. From my experience at about 125K on a cherokee with part time 4WD you can expect to replace the transfer case which will set you back about $1500. Just expect it and set the money aside for it.
Currently I have a 95 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 110K. My only complaint about this design which is full time 4WD is that the airconditioner does not work and because of the way it was engineered the repair if I do it won't last long.
My jeeps are used in off road use too, on sand. This Grand CHerokee is better than the regular cherokee was IMO.
Jeep parts are abundant, and the design has been around a long time because it is so good.
The downsides is the gas mileage and that you have to respect that it is not a car, you shouldn't corner fast. Drive it like a truck.
With proper care and maintenance that engine will run past 200,000 miles with no problems. I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 with the 4.0L Straight 6 engine (same one your talking about) and I'm about 400 miles away from hitting 200,000 miles. All I've done is oil/filter changes every 3,000 miles, transmission fluid changes every 55,000 miles. I had to have a new starter put in about 9,000 miles ago, and a new radiator about 2 years ago (offroading mishap).
I have a 96 Grand Cherokee with over 240,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. It depends on how you take care of them.
The downside? Lets see, they have a history of having bad crank position sensors, the tailgate latches were engineered badly and they eat gas. I get about 14 mpg and I just did a complete tune-up. They are also known to be a little top-heavy so they roll easily. There are a whole list of things that could be considered a down side. But, I wouldn't trade mine for anything. It runs too good, and even though it's 4wd, it has a pretty good ride.
if you can find one with the 4.0 6 cylinder in it. and if it was properly take care of it can last awhile our 95 GC had the 4.0 in it had 190,000miles on it when we sold it no major problems. today it has 198,000miles. my dads friend has 285,000 on his 4.0 no major problems. we also had a 01 with the 4.7 v8 and we sold it at 130,000miles not sure of mileage today but i still see it every now and then. i love my 04 GC its great a rides nice. my 4.7 v8 gets about 14-16mpg city and my best is 20mpg highway. my mom has a 04 and so does my dad. we love our jeeps. down side of them is if your tall and your driving its hard for a adult to sit in the back seat behind you. but as far as people saying that they roll easy. i dont think they do. i travel up and down a mountain every day with sharp turns and i feel very safe in it. but that doesn't mean that you cant roll it as long as you drive responsibly and take care of it. then a jeep will be good
