"Joe Six Pack" was not originally intended to be offensive, just a description of people in general. Many people have taken this to be offensive and to be derogatory. I have never thought of it as being as bad as you describe, but have understood many people to use the term in a derogatory manner.

This term really means the "average person", since most people drink beer while watching a game, even thoughh they may or may not consume an entire 6-pack.

Sarah Palin said this in the recent debate and she should not have done so. It was not a tasteful thing to say. But it is NOT true that "the McCain camp keeps using that term."

No, it doesn't mean that Joe Six Pack is an alcoholic and it doesn't mean that every american drinks alcoholic beverages on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. I don't drink and I realize what the term means.
