I am thinking of going in the beginning of August, but I don't want to be stuck in crowds. Does anybody know if it gets too crowded? Also, anybody have a recommendation for a nice place to stay (not camping) at around 150-200 per night.

August is still pretty hot in the Valley. The best time of year to visit is in the late spring or the very early summer when school is still in.
The waterfalls and streams are at their fullest, the days are clear and crisp and the summer crowds haven't arrived yet.
While there you have to eat at least one meal at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Christmas week at the Hotel is booked out 5-7 years. The rooms are rustic but worth a stay.
No not too crowded, but waterfalls will be a little dry. Views though still awesome. Try to sleep in the valley to enjoy stars at night.
Yosemite Lodge or Wawona are affordable.
