I will be going to study architecture at university in September and was wondering what the best set up would be. I cannot find any guidance on the university websites so I thought I would come here for help. Also heard that a tablet may be more useful to bring to studio and lectures rather than a laptop? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you need the portability of a laptop? You can't take a desktop system to classes w/you. I wouldn't consider a tablet as a replacement for a laptop; they're more of a media consumer device.
Do you know if you're going to need to run any CAD programs? If so, a desktop may make the most sense; one w/lots of RAM, a fast cpu, a dedicated graphics card, & a large display. I should think that someone at your school should be able to provide some guidance for your architecture courses.
Dell, Lenovo, & ASUS make quality hardware. You do get what you pay for, so plan on spending more than the minimum if you want a good system that'll last a couple of years at least. Desktops are upgradable & should last longer, keep that in mind.
I would buy a kick *** desktop (as far as your money can get you), and then get a fairly inexpensive tablet that you can use to remote to that desktop. That way, you can do all your hard core work in front of the actual computer, and you can use the tablet to make minor changes or do presentations.
I think that a laptop would be best they are easy to transport around and to bee honesnt i would not buy a tablet there not as good as people say
