The refillable cartridges add support for the filter pad. I do not find any reason to use carbon, but the refillable cartridges will allow you to use it if you want to. This will save you money in the long run. You can cut the blue bonded filter pad to fit, then rinse them off in tank water as needed until they fall apart and need to be replaced. Then just cut some more to fit. Email me if you have any questions. I could send you pics of how mine is set up if needed.

I'd say no. I've never experimented with exactly these but I've learned that different type s of cartridges shouldn't be mixed.
