Swindon isn't so bad and has an excellent train service to both London (Paddington) and Cheltenham Spa. There is a lot of beautiful countryside close to Swindon - the Marlborouh Downs, Savernake Forest and the Cotswolds. You might also think of Kemble a smaller place also with good rail connections
As you need good road and/or rail links to London and Cheltenham then Oxford or Swindon are the best options. Of these two Swindon is likely to be cheaper for housing but it's a pretty bland type of town. Oxford is a lot more interesting.
