I own a 69 dart with a 1980 318 with a 4b with a 904 trans and I get about 12mpg I was wondering if that's seemed a little bad or what? Also I have a 1968 383 motor with a 727 trans that I will be putting a 4b on as well what would be reasonable mpg for that in the dart? On the other hand I just bought a 1958 jeep Willy's pickup 2 wheel drive with 3.55:1 gears would a 318 work good or is the 383 a better choice for it. And what gas mileage do you think the willy's would get in that. Any advice on any of these projects would be great. Thanks

As for the 318 switch to a 383, the 383 will have larger cylinder holes that have to be filled with more gasoline. I don't think it would be a good idea, what with the cost of gasoline being so high and going higher. Changing the engine in the Willys truck would be a tough job, and cost more than staying with the stock engine. You would have to buy an adapter kit (if available), which i doubt. Folks didn't do much custom work on Willys trucks. I worked for a Jeep dealer at the time the trucks were current. They did right well with the stock engine/tranny combo. I have never seen any work done on the trucks, like you are asking about. A better thing would be changing the rear differential ratio on the car, and lots cheaper than an engine swap! On the Jeep, changing both differentials would cost a LOT of MONEY, and i don't know if there are any trucks still around, in the junk yards, or new parts available.
