My border collie dog, Lucky, is a year and a half old. So, here's his problem.
For a long time now, Lucky has been pooping in his kennel frequently. Even though we let him outside, he still goes poop it seems not even 2 hours after he was let outside. When we let him inside, he finds some place to poop in the house as well and does not warn us when he has to go to the bathroom like my other dog, who wines and runs to the back door.
He is severely underweight and we feed him a generous amount of food. However, sometimes, he vomits all of it right back up.
We definetely know that he has diarrhea but he has had this condition for awhile and I'm pretty sure he's past the 'I'm not potty trained so I'll poop every where" stage. His poop is liquidy and mucousy and it does not look at all like regular dog poop. Sometimes, it does, but it most of the time doesn't.
My dad thinks it is not a problem, but me and my mom have been looking up on it and we think he has (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). We've had problems with this with another dog in the past but we aren't positive if he has it or not.
Is there anything else that could have caused these problems? Is it normal? Should I go to a vet?
Update:Another thing.
We took him to the vet three months ago when he had this same issue, and they said he was fine. That nothing was wrong with him. I want to take him to a different vet but my mother says that our vet is fine.
And stop blaming it on me. I don't make the decisions in my house. lol. My parents do.

Sound familiar? Your dog will need to be fed a really bland diet till the colitis clears up. When he is finally able to eat dog food again be careful, colitis can return. When he is able very gradually introduce a premium quality food till he can handle it. Again, yes, vet. After all I am only guessing it is colitis and even if I am correct you need to follow vets instructions.
For the love of God why haven't had this very sick dog to the vet.
You say this has been going on for a long time yet your family has done nothing to help this poor sick dog. Don't you people care about the dog at all?
A dog with IBD, and it does sound as though it could be that, has no control over the diarrhea, that's why he poops in the crate. He can't help it!!!!
The mucus you see is the stripping of the lining of his intestines. Can you imagine how much pain this dog is in. He has a problem with his entire digestive system if he's also vomiting frequently.
Your father is being a cruel idiot. Of course there is something wrong with the dog and it's serious.
DO SOMETHING to help this dog. Get him to a vet and if your father is not prepared to pay for treatment for the dog then for crisakes have the dog gently put to sleep. At least that way he will suffer no more pain because of his owners who don't care enough to help him.
ADDED: If your vet thinks a dog who is vomiting and has mucusy diarrhea constantly is just fine then your vet is an even bigger idiot.
IF you take the dog to the vet again take a sample of the diarrhea with the mucus and ask the vet to send it off to pathology because I doubt such a dumb vet would be able to do even a basic test himself.
Bill, I think the drug you mention is Metronidazole. That's the usual treatment for giardia.
You know the saying dogs can smell your fear? Well the same goes for other emotions like happiness, sadness, and yes sickness. And although your dog might understand that you are sick you still can't change the fact that he's a dog and needs some sort of exercise! If you aren't able to play with your dog you need to find someone to come over to play with him/her. Whether it be a neighborhood boy or girl, a hired dog-walker. Anything will be better than nothing. Hope I helped!!!!
Of course you need to take the dog to the vet because only a vet can find out why even though you make sure you feed your dog a lot of food, he is still underweight. Also your father clearly doesn't understand not to take a dog to the vet when they are clearly in need of medical attention is against the law. That dog is as dependent on you as were as a small child and still are as you are still a minor.
Seriously, you're asking if this is normal? You know it isn't. You already called it a problem.
You need to take your dog to a vet. Nobody can diagnose over the internet nor are there many trained vets online just hanging about waiting for your question.
I can't imagine how much distress your dog must be in, and probably pain too.
I think that you should take your dog and a stool sample to the vets. I also think that you should consider changing his food to a grain free dog food, because he obviously has a digestion problem.
I have learnt by my mistakes. My present dog had dreadful problems because of the food which I gave her, I experimented with dog food, I tried raw diets, cooked diets and over the years I tried various dog foods. She did not like the raw diets and the dog food that I gave her resulted in diarrhoea. As an experienced dog owner I introduced any changes gradually. Nevertheless my dog still had problems. She was eight years old before I resolved her problem.
Eventually, because of my researches on the Internet I found that the experts have discovered that GRAIN in our dog’s diet causes many problems. I now know that grain creates acidity in the blood. This causes skin problems, digestive issues, allergies, sickness, constipation, diarrhoea, anal gland problems etc.,
if your dog has skin problems or any of the above problems PLEASE CHANGE THE DIET. Avoid Grain, rice, beef derivatives and dairy food
I now give my dog a dried food which uses beet for fibre and fish. It’s called Fish4Dogs and I buy it on the Internet. Look on the Internet and investigate yourself. Gluten free dog food is not enough to help our dogs, it MUST BE GRAIN FREE.
A rapid change of diet will upset your dog; any change of diet must be done gradually. Do please change to a grain free diet. I have had sixteen dogs throughout the years and they have had various problems. Perhaps if I had known about the dangers of GRAIN they would have had fewer problems. .
You should have gone to the vet a long time ago. Something like this is serious. Wy would you wait this long. Be a responsible pet owner and get rid of all of your pets to responsible homes. You are in no position to raise an animal. Lucky is very unlucky to have you. He is sick and needed care a long time ago. Pathetic.
Well I don't know what part of the country you're in, but it sounds like giardia to me. I know about this disease, unfortunately because one of mine had diarrhea for months before we figured it out.BEWARE! There are at least three differnt tests for this parasite but NONE OF THEM AREE REAL ACCUATE.
This is treated with an antibiotic, I think it starts with an 'm' but I don't remember for sure(sorry). We treated her for 7 days the first time, but symptoms returned after the third day off of the antibiotics. We the treated her for 21 days. that was over 2 years ago and she's happy and healthy as ever.
Good luck- oh- they get it by eating; dirt, fesces, grass, drinking water puddles, etc.
Ask your vet specifically about giardia!!!! I'm in N.E. Indiana, this usually occurs in warmer climates but our climate is changing.
yeah, you should really call a vet. Vomitting and diarrhea are not normal when they happen all the time. Something is going on with your dog and you really need to find out what it is.
By the sounds of thing you should leave your dog out a little longer till he does both jobs just keep a eye on him and it wouldn't hurt to take him to a different vet and get a second opinion
