I have an odd problem that I don't know how to solve.
I created a word document four years ago, and I am guessing it was created in Microsoft Word. I have since owned a few other computers and have been using Linux in all of them, and have opened this document and worked on it in Open Office (I guess?- whatever you use with Linux). Anyway, whenever I save and close it, then reopen it, some pages skip a few spaces, instead of starting at the start of the page- the top. I have tried everything I know to solve this issue, including creating a brand new document on Linux and copying and pasting all to it. Not sure how to solve this. It has morphed into a 200 page document so re- typing everything is out of the question. Help, please!!!
Also, on an unrelated subject, how do you put a password on a USB flash drive, so no one can open it but you?

Update:This document has chapters (it's a dissertation) and at the beginning of each chapter, instead of the top of the chapter starting at the top of the following page, it starts either a few lines down or in the middle or randomly somewhere other than the top. I hope this clarifies the problem (sorry)

Do you mean that some pages are skipping a few pages, rather than spaces? i.e. there are, say, a few blank pages between some pages?
I'm going to assume that each page is full, or fairly full of text, is that right? I suspect what is happening is that you have page breaks at the bottom of these pages, and when you open the document and it reformats itself on screen according to what printer you are linked to, it is moving everything down a bit, and forcing the page breaks onto a new, blank page, which means it creates a blank page where there shouldn't be one.
Try a very simple test. Open the document, then select all the text (Control+A), then change the size of the text down a point size or two. Does this solve the problem? (i.e. by moving everything up and eliminating unwanted page breaks).
If so, you just need to get rid of the excess page breaks. If you can confirm you are using OpenOffice I can tell you how to do this. Linux is an operating system; the word processing software could be a few things.

1. Skipping spaces or lines?
Ah ok. When you want to start a new page, do you typically just hit Enter a few times until you get there? The problem with this approach is that as you insert new sentences the multiple newlines get pushed down and break your page alignment. The correct approach is to Insert > Manual break > Page break (from memory so bear with me!), which will ensure the subsequent text always starts at the top of a new page

attempt those settings: FORMATPARAGRAPHIndents & Spacing tab. Set INDENTATION Left and perfect to 0 (not automobile) Set particular to "none" Set SPACING in the previous and After to 0 (not automobile) Set LINE SPACING to "single" ok whilst your format is going goofy, this could be a solid place to look. solid success.
