OK. I was in a parking lot, I put in drive, and by the time it went into second gear The moter turned itself off. It made a clunk that made me thing the drive shaft dropped. I looked under the truck and nothing out of the ordinary. I also looke under the hood and everything looks fine. Just because I checked the oil and its fine (no water in it.) I also checked the the radiator and its fine. When I try to turn it over it acts like the starter has trouble turning the moter. Ive ckecked the starter and it fine too. I had the little 4,6 ltr rebuilt a few years ago, but the shop I went through is no longer around. Any ideas?

It's 14 years old. Get a new car.
It jumped time you can try rotating the distributor and it may start but you will need to replace the timing chain and gear. You can try to rotate the distributor it sounds like the timing is too far advanced that is why the starter is dragging turn the distributor until the engine stops dragging then it might start I doubt it but it's worth a shot. Get some prices on having the chain and gear replaced or you can try and do it yourself if you are mechanically enclined. You can get a repair manual from your local auto parts store I recommend Chiltons Repair Manual it will tell you everything step by step they should have one for your make and model. The parts will be around $100 but it does take a little doing... Good Luck
If the starter is solid and it won't turn the motor over, you have a subject the two interior the motor or flywheel aspects meaning vast issues. or you have had an adjunct grab on the front of the motor like an alternator. first factor to do is take away the serp. belt and notice if the motor will crank and fire now. If it does, verify each and all the accessory for which one does not spin extremely straightforward and that stands out as the topic. If the motor nevertheless does not crank, get a huge ratchet and socket onto the front pulley bolt and attempt to coach the motor over your self. If it does not you have a huge subject and a gaggle of stuff will could be torn all the way down to make certain what has exceeded off. solid success.
you could threaten it with an article 32 or send it to iraq,, a good field day might scare it into working,, sorry,, try turning the motor by hand and see what kind of resistence you get,, you might have dropped a valve and its binding up,,you really cant check a starter,, if its out of the car its not under load,, it has to be checked underload,, just because the gear jumps out does not mean it will start the car,,put it in nuetral and turn the motor by hand,, then go from there,,
Try starting the car in park in neutral. Your transmission may be mis-shifting into a much higher gear than needed, causing the engine to snub out.
Something that recent would have a computer on it--check the brain box out to see if there's any corrosion in it. That may be causing the mis-shift or is fiddling with the injectors, causing the snub-out.
I had a similar problem with an s 10 and it turned out to be a frozen bering on the air conditioner compressor. Try removing the belts and see if it turns over.
if this is a chevy cavalier and its a job thats gonna cost more t han 500$ its not worth fixing you could buy a 1999 cavalier for 1500-2000$ if this car isnt a cavalier just ignore this
go 2 start it regularly then give it some gas if that doesnt work change the spark plugs
it's possible that your oil pump quit working and your engine is blown.
thats what happens with american cars. you need a jap made car
