Why does Navy Federal say in their commercial they are open to all military when they do not accept Coast Guard members? Is the Coast Guard not part of the military. Seems like they have a very different definition of who the military is exactly.
Update:MARINE- I never said anything about DOD. Also just because someone is DHS and not DOD does not make them not military.

I am a member so I went WTF and there is no way. So I looked it up....

It does truly look like if you are not at the academy,in an officer program of sorts you can't join. But if you are a civilian working at a Coast Guard base you can..... that is total bull. I did note the banner at the top listed every other service other than the Coast Guard.
I am Army but on both sides of my family and my wife's every service is represented. From young to old, people who do regular things to those who fly jets to ground pounders in the Army SF. With a few Coasties sprinkled around.
Sure we all have acess to various credit unions but why not the Coast Guard with Navy federal? I did not answer your question but that actually ticks me off.
Members of the Coast Guard are eligible to join Navy Fed. Coast Guard is not listed under Department of Defense because they fall under Department of Homeland Security (used to be Dept of Transportation). This is why Navy Fed lists them as Government Employees since they are not considered part of the three military Departments - Army, Navy, Air Force which are made up of four designated military Services (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force) per Title 10 USC.
In time of war, the President can attach the Coast Guard under the Department of the Navy. Then they would be considered a military Service.

techncially CG is DHS, NOT DoD. its posisble that it stems from their past history as a DoT and that since the move to DHS the NFCU charter has not been revised.
or maybe they are not permitted to admit CG members for some reason.
I want to ask the same question as the user above.
I dunno - I've been a member for almost 15 years... They lump us in with fed employees rather than military members.
