I read in a reptile book that some breeders put just the calcium powder in a dish in the bearded dragon cage and the lizard will eat it if he needs calcium. my lizard dose not need any more now but it would be helpful to not have to dust crickets. Does this work? has any one tried it?

After keeping beardies for 6+ years I have never heard of anyone keeping a calcium dish in their bearded dragon's enclosure. A LOT of reptile books are old, outdated or just plain wrong information. Stick to dusting your crickets or veggies, it is a much more reliable way of making sure your beardie is getting the calcium it needs.
It is best to do both, dusting crickets and putting calcium in a little dish. Yes, putting calcium in a dish does work, my lizards like to eat the calcium from the dish once in a while. It is like a little mid-day snack for them. Also it will give them extra calcium for the day, if you do decide to do both, but you must dust its food with calcium.
throw crickets in they have cacium in them
