My son turned 4 in June. I have been teaching him his whole life. As far as "formal education" goes, he is already ahead of the pre-k class for our ISD, which does NOT have a good reputaion in general.
Aside from that I have issues with public schools ranging from institutionalized settings to inappropriate disciplinary actions to school uniforms.
I have extensively researched the laws for homeschool in my state, so those issues are of no concern to me. Socialization is not a major concern because of the large number of homeschool activities and groups in my area.
Reasons I condsider homeschool are: socialization (high gang activity in area), individualized learning pace and activities, 1 on 1 instruction. Mostly because no one will ever care for my childrens success as much as myself.
Our ISD is currently running different programs for pre-k ranging from montessori to tuition based to "general" pre-k. They are also not zone regulated meaning I can put my child in any school in our ISD.

The deciding factors for me were: Self-paced instruction designed for my child according to the style of learning they each individually posses, the inappropriate nature that has become the norm in today's society of how children are allowed to act, and that I care for my child's education far more than anyone else.
You could also look into the other schools in you school district while you are making a decision.
Years ago when I was in your situation I prayed and fasted for a while. I asked my kids of their preference after having attended Pre-K and Kindergarten, then I was given an answer. We are now in our third year of homeschooling.
HAPPY SCHOOLING!
One thing about home schooling over public school that proves to be true over and over again. Even the most uneducated home school teacher will out do a better job educating the children. When teaching problems come up there is plenty of help online in forums and contact groups. Children raised with love goes a lot farther than the trash in the public school system. These kids go on to college and always do far better time and time again.
Having home schooled my oldest son through High School I have strong feelings about this. Home school serves it purpose, as does public school. My youngest son attended public school through out high school! The difference... the child! My oldest was very smart and gifted in things like mechanics, math, science, computers, etc. The public school counselor stated that his first year in high school was not enough of a challenge to him, there fore his grades dropped. We pulled him out of public schools, except for Vocational Center, and found a home school. It was by far the best thing in the world for him, and me as well! Any subject that became too boring was easily stepped up to a level that posed a challenge to him.
My youngest son on the other hand was more of a social person, he enjoyed musical things, played in several bands and was a member of the debate team, fo him home school would have never worked!
So it is really up to the child, do they need the higher challenges home school can offer, or do they thrive on socialization?
Best of luck to you, I hope this has helped you a little! (Oh, the plus for me was the time I got to spend teaching the subjects to my son, I learned along with him!)
