ok...so my mom is a type 2 diabetic.
She does take insulin injections.
Her blood sugar is normally in the high 100's-200's; that's just normal for her. Her blood sugar came down to 40, and she started to act like a little kid. what could cause this type of reaction, and what is the best way to help her if this happens again? She just went to the hospital for it, but I dont want to have to call 911 everytime if I can help it. I need answers ASAP from people who know what they are dealing with! Thanks alot in advance!!! =]
Update:I cant give her a drink in this situation; my dad gave her a coke and had to tell her to swallow.

she had what we call a hypo! totally not a fun thing for either the diabetic or the carer. basically what probably happened is that she had taken her insulin dose, but perhaps didn't eat enough carbohydrate to cover it. therefore the insulin just kept on working at bringing her sugars down.
she will probably recognize the symptoms if it happens again and i'm sure you will too. so if either of you notice what you must do is give her a glass of orange juice, and some carbohydrate, like a slice of bread. keep a check on her sugars. if they don't go up in 5-10 mins repeat the orange juice.
OJ is very concentrated in sugar so it acts rapidly on the blood sugar to rise it. its one of the best, easiest to come by, hypo treatments. any regular soda works as well, but i always found it horrible drinking something so fizzy when i just wanted to feel better!
obviously if this doesn't work at all you'll have to call 911, but unless there was a serious problem, this is the way to treat a hypo! we all learn about it as type 1's, and i'm assuming type 2's do also, but if it doesn't happen often, its easy to forget.
it can take anywhere between 5-30 mins to feel right again after a hypo, depending on how severe it was. 40 is pretty low, i've been there and i've been nutty!
so hope your mom feels better and i hope you don't have to use the hypo treatment but hope you feel confident in it if you do!!!

my moms is also type 2 and taking insulin...2 shots. her normal is high 300's due to a stroke. Once she got down to 36 and we had to call 911. Took a day for her to wake up, doctors don't know why. There is this sugar insulin given by mounth if she ever gets that low again. My mom was sleeping at the time and wouldn't wake up so your mom acting like a kid was differnet. With it being that low I am surprized she was even awake. good luck
Warning signs of low blood sugars are cold, clammy skin, nausea, sleepiness, weakness, confusion - which may contribute to why she was acting kiddish. If you notice those symptoms check her blood sugar right away. If she takes scheduled insulin she needs to let her Dr. know what happened, she also needs to let her dr know about her blood sugars ranging from what you say they are. Her Dr may make some medication/insulin adjustments if necessary. It is very important she checks her blood sugar. Check out this website. I hope it is helpful for you.
Learn how to test her sugar and how to treat a low sugar.
If she is conscious, she may be able to drink something very hi in carbs. I use regular soda.It is straight sugar water.
If she has a seizure, you need to know how to use glugagon.Talk to the doctor about that.
It doesn't seem that many people know that around here.
A simple low sugar , even a seizure can easily be treated at home.
My daughter has only had two seizures in her life.
She was about 9 yrs old and the first time we called the ambulance and went to the ER.
Her doctor told us to treat her at home. The next time, we were ready.
I suppose he has good reason because you forgot to mention the 8 cats, 4 rabbits, 3 dogs, 1 guinea pig, 15 chickens, 1 elephant, 2 rhinoceroses, 3 giraffes, and 7 turtles.
Hey,
your mum has been having high blood sugars which you say is normal. when she went down to 40, she had a hypo or hypoglycemia. she wouldnt normally have 1 if she is normally high but being silly woul dbe her way of her body knowing its having a hypo.
i hope this helped.
She is type 1 diabetic if she takes insulin. She needs to be on a strict diet or she will die. 40 is too low and she is not eating correctly and testing two hours after each meal. You need to read up on diabetic solutions. TCOYD is a good start. Please follow up for your mother's health.
Balance insulin taken with food eaten.
