Recently, I noticed what can only be described as a "ringing house phone" sound when the vehicle reaches a high enough RPM to shift into the next gear - it seems to occur at that peak moment when the automatic transmission is making the shift. Not sure if it's the engine, transmission, or something unrelated. It sounds like one of those "classic TV/movie" lower-toned phones - maybe a vibrating hollow metal-ish sound? It subsides once in the next gear, until it shifts up again. Oh, and it only seems to do it going up, not down, in gear. Any ideas?

My guess is maybe a broken catalytic converter . The inside honey comb breaks apart and can make the noise you are talking about . Also look at the heat shields on the exhaust and the drive shafts for a loose dust shield .
I had a customer describe such a sound last week on there blue Pathfinder. There was a cheery bomb muffler on the left side of the exhaust and stock down pipe on the right side. And I could not duplicate he sound on my test drive. I would suspect the exhaust is ringing or something inside the exhaust.
