Sleepy California by Her Space Holdiay is the most depressing song ever. Not like dark and depressing, just kind of... makes you think about everything that's ever gone wrong in your life depressing. I like it though.

not indie but I'm too tired to give any other example. Radiohead, you can't go wrong with them. For the love of Thom don't just listen to Creep. Most of their music is sad and atmospheric which is what makes it Radiohead. They are awesome and so is Modest Mouse and Sea Wolf so check out some of their songs. I could name bands and songs all day but the best thing about music is exploration. So go explore music it's the greatest thing ever.
P.S. You never said you knew Radiohead before I posted my answer and know I didn't give any song names.
