If I have a system with a certain number of jobs each of which has a specific process time and deadline. What are some ways/algorithms to optimize the jobs to be the finished closest to the deadline (minimize time for the job to be done before or after the deadline). Would really appreciate any ideas out there! thanks

Scheduling can be done with a drawing showing paths for different tasks on a timeline. A better way is to use a program like MS Project, or equiv. You must enter each task and the relationships of each of these tasks to each other using the resources available. The program will have show the drawing and the predicted completion date. If this date is not soon enough then you need to look for errors and then either change the relationships or add resources.

After you take all that time optimizing the schedule stop and remember it is all based on a bunch of estimates (as in the word guesses) and unless you temper your work with some probabilty analysis your result is all just a big guess.
