First of all as a Girl I find this disgusting, and maybe im just ranting on about it, but I kinda care for my friend so i want to ask this very important question.. so here it goes...
So recently a friend (who just turned 18) of mine informed me that he believes his phones being tapped, (to be honest I don't believe him, since he is somewhat Paranoid)
Over all, he explained he's been texting and talking to this girl on the phone, (She lives in a different state than him) apparently (so he says) she told him she was 18, so they did perverted things, apparently no actual pictures were sent, nonetheless he found out shes not 18 (since she told him, apparently she's 15 or 16 i don't remember...) and hes ending contact with her, but after a few weeks now he's worried they can use whatever he wrote by text, or said on the phone against him, since they met on a online website.
So here is the question:
What are the Legal implications
Can he be arrested or is it very unlikely he will be?
Can his phone be tapped, or can his deleted text messages be read even (if both parties said they deleted the messages(?)
Apparently, she has told him that her mother has talked to the police, even so this could mean either they retrieved all the information from who knows how long (i think he said several months) or they didn't' get anything since the girl found out.. thus if they started recording since than they wouldn't get anything.
======
I myself am studying law, -,- and in the scenario I've just placed I do believe he can get in trouble with the Law, (since I want to be a prosecutor for justice myself), even so I believe he did disturbing things (I mean sexting (no pictures) or 'cybering' as others put it is a rather disgusting thing)... Even so, being a pervert with what you believe to be a none-minor shouldn't exactly be prosecuted for a pedophile, or should he?
Anyways~ comment or do as you please, hopefully this will scare him enough to not do anything this stupid again.

I'm in Britain, so I don't know an awful lot about US law and the varying state laws, but from what I know I'm fairly sure that 'cybering' using only text is not illegal. The fact that the supposed minor in the situation lied about her age to engage in the conversations will only do favours for your friend.
I highly doubt his phone has been tapped - especially if he is paranoid. The chances are that nothing will come from this, nothing other than a valuble lesson for your friend anyway. As long as he does actually end contact with her, I can't see there being any problem.
Can only answer for UK law - presume it will be similar. Yes this would be considered as illegal if he knew she was under age. The facts would be relevant. If she has posed as an adult then he has been misled. However there are other implications other than the criminal law. If he works and is in a teaching or care role, and his employer finds out, he could lose his job if his actions breach a code of conduct or breach the trust and confidence his employer has in him.
