Depends on which "undesirable" discharge you got. Getting out with an Other Than Honorable isn't as bad as getting out with a Dishonorable. The VA can give you a better answer but in most cases anything less than a General Under Honorable Conditions causes your benefits to disappear.
VA Health Care Benefits : A person who served in the active military , naval or air service and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable may qualify for VA Health Care benefits. Educational Benefits require an honorable discharge. Go to www.va.gov and download the Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents and Survivors handbook. It will tell you all the blah , blah , blah stuff.
my guess is pretty much nothing which is only slightly less if any less than an honorable.
unofficially.. you get the benefit of not having a violent premature death or other violent crime committed on you.
you wont be electricuted by haliburton showers
your exposure to chemicals and spent uranium shells will be minimized
you can go make real money doing similar things, you know the guys u saw doing your job for 10x the money while u were serving.. without having to put up with any of the crap you did.
none of these are official benefits.. but like i said even if you exited honorably.. the only benefit u got was to keep your uniform and wear it sometimes.. along with something to put in a resume.
even the retirements have gone to crap.. in the 60's and 70's you retired with half pay (which was based on nearly your entire pay).. 2.5% per year served. at 20 years that's 50%
now.. your retired pay is based on avg of high 3 years u served and .. only 40% instead of 50. worse yet.. your base pay which retirement is calculated from has dropped from being 80-100% of your pay to probably less than 60%.. meaning you get screwed even further.
the only good thing to come out of military service since world war II (every other change screwing the veteran) .. is the newest gi bill .. one that actually pays for a college education.. unlike the prior ones that often wouldnt even pay for books.
after wwII it was understood that when you retired you had health care for life .. space avialiable at any military medical facility;. but that's gone now too.. somehow the private insurance industry has taken over the miltary medical system.. making it virtually worthless to too many veterans. premiums, copays and deductables etc the prime tools to discourage use.
i'd avoid an undesirable.. but if you do get one the less time you served the better. everyone makes mistakes. military is not for everyone.
as far as benefits tho.. i'm pretty sure someone being released from prison gets more than you do.
Bottom line is and i hate to say this is unless you have a honorable discharge, at time of military departure or you get the va to bump up your discharge to honorable you are not eligible for any benefits what so ever. cpl hoof, 814 engineers
