Dinosaurs are believed to have evolved during the Triassic period, which is 250-200 million years ago.
Dinosaurs evolved from a group of reptiles called Archosaurs. The Archosaur line split, in the middle to late Triassic period. One portion evolved into Crocodiles... the other part gave rise to the dinosaurs, and through dinosaurs to birds.
By the late triassic (228 million years ago - 200 million years ago) several theropod carnivorous dinosaurs had evolved, such as Eoraptor, Coelophysis and Herrerasaurus - the ancestors of later giants such as T.rex. At this time dinosaurs such as plateosaurus had evolved too - the ancestors of the later giant herbivorous dinosaurs such as diplodocus and brachiosaurus.
The dinosaurs eventually became extinct 65 million years ago.
