If you're in the USA then today retirement is either at 62 (and you get less) or at 66. The age probably will rise in the future so people will just continue to work. When you work full time you'd probably get insurance from your employer. If you worked during your life then some money from SS will come to you (depending on the economy and your age and how long you worked) so with that money you'd rent an apartment, finding a place/state where you can pay what you have. Otherwise a person would have one of their children take them in, or rent a room in a relative's home. And here if people have nothing they sign up for food stamps and welfare and perhaps Section 8 could help them get into some kind of facility. If your relatives let you stay there for free then there would be free, but I suspect they'd want you to pay for your own food and laundry.
For me it was the start of something new. A complete change of life style from working 9 to 5 to doing exactly what I want for a change and not just at the weekend, but any day I like.
Today my partner and me spent the entire day working in our garden. Tomorrow we're off out to check out Oxford Street, have lunch somewhere, and play around and probably get home about midnight - or later.
Oh yeah. As London pensioners we have the FREEDOM PASS and we can travel 24/7 any time anywhere in and around London right out to Zone 6 and beyond.
We've also started taking more holidays - shorter but more frequent. Thus instead of the traditional two weeks somewhere, we now have three single one week holidays. So far, Paris and the Algarve. In September we're off to Crete - swine flu or not.
I haven't reached State Retirement Age yet but I did take an early Occupational Pension from a former employer. I can still work part time if I wanted to but have never really got around to it! I guess I am enjoying it too much and there is so much to do.
Start of something new for me, but then again. I'm retired medically. I served in the USAF. By disability alone, I am what I be. I could rant tango on what I think, but I think that I've said enough before; so I'll not this time.
It depends on how desperate you are to finish working.
If you still feel the need to be useful in the workforce then I bet it can be a bit upsetting. But, on the other hand, if you've had enough of the grind then it's probably the lease of life you've been waiting for.
ive been lucky to have worked most of my life and retirement is about another 15 years away. it will fly. for me it will be an end of an era but the start of another venture.
id say its the start of something new where you dont hav to worry about getting up early and going 2 work and pleasing other people when u retire its your time 2 do whatever u please to do and you hav all the time in the world
I would imagine that it is your choice and you can make it whatever you want it to be. It will probably be strange at first as is everything that is new.
Decide to make it an exciting time and look forward to it.
