A 44 rem mag is better. I would chose a Ruger Red Hawk or Black Hawk with at lest a 8 1/2 inch barrel. But would limit to 50 yards. A 100 yards is pushing it with even a 44 mag Ruger deer field rifle. A 45 long colt in my opinion is more of a 30 yard shooter if you are looking for a clean kill.
The .44 Rem. Mag. is a good, well established pistol cartrdige that is more than capable of taking deer and the like withing 100 yards, but be sure to practice up before heading into the woods. As for the .45, I can't think of any popular sporting rounds that are .45 caliber. If you are thinking of the .45 ACP, it is not really considered a hunting round, but it is an excellent self-defense round. Best bet is to go with the .44 Mag.
.44 mag is an excellent round, and I have taken a lot of game with one. U prefer the 240 grain JSP for deer and go up to a 300 grain for Black bear (although I have used the 240 on bear as well.)
The .45lc in a quality well made modern revolver (such as the Ruger) can be loaded heavy enough to make it a good capable hunting round, but I still prefer the .44 mag.
The .45acp is NOT good for hunting, although I have used them many times to finish off deer hit by cars and suffering.
I can't get to my books right now to give you ballistics, etc since they are all packed for a move.
This is Yahoo Answers; and it, certainly isn't obvious whether or not, '45' means either ACP or LC.
The asker should mean 45LC; but, around here, he might not. There ain't a heck of a lot of difference between 45LC and 44 Magnum. The edge, of course, goes to the magnum; but, for medium-sized game, about the only advantage the shooter will have is the magnum's going to shoot flatter over distance.
Either caliber's going to hit hard enough! (Did anyone say, '45 Super'?) Now, 45ACP? That's a whole different story!
I must agree, .44 magnum has it hands down at that range. There are a lot of other handgun rounds that are adequate at that range but almost all of them start with a .4 and end in magnum. (500 S&W Mag would be the exception)
well, it's the .44 magnum no question, even .45 hot loads don't have the velocity to keep the stopping power up higher then a .44 magnum at those ranges.
note- people, he means the .45 Colt, should be obvious to anyone whose answering this question.

Shoot safe
Which .45? .45ACP, .45 Long Colt .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, or .45- 120. The .45-120 is much more powerful than the .44 Magnum.

44 Magnum has a bit of an edge over stout 45 Colt handloads in a Ruger or Contender, and a heck of a large advantage over standard loads.
