You asked a question for which there are many answers, depending on your age, interests, and objectives. Interested in being a "tourist" and lazing at a crowded beach to be seen, and see others? [Go to Honolulu/Waikiki] Interested in nature, waterfalls, and pristine beauty? [Try Kauai] Interested in laid-back touring, beaches, and family-oriented activities? (Go for Maui], and if remote beaches, pineapple plantations and fewer crowds are what you seek, go for either of these islands: Molokai or Lanai. There are other islands, but these are most frequently considered as "Hawaii."
All the answerers have good points. It really depends on what you're looking for. Be honest w/yourself & go to the island that best fits your needs. My personal favorite is Kauai (have been to Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai) - has the beautiful valley, gorgeous beaches, and the North shore is fabulous. We went last year in January & you could see the whales spouting. I will say that Kona (Big Island) had the most fabulous sunsets because of the vog (volcanic smog).
