Hi,
I adopted a 10 week old kitten from a shelter (veterinarian nurse that took in strays) 5 days ago. The carer had advised my kitten's stool was a little loose possibly due to the worming done the week before.
4 days ago I noticed a little bit of blood in my kitty's stool but wasn't too sure as it had dried by the time I arrived home from work. Today my kitty pooped and had a little bit of bright red blood stuck on his bottom - I've had to wipe him down after bathroom visits as he has not yet learned to fully clean himself - I checked to stool and it also had little traces of blood in it.
The carer had said Stark (the kitty) was only on dry Purina Pro Plan, so I've continued this. Last night, to try and firm up his stool, I added some plan boiled chicken.
Stark is due for his checkup and 2nd vaccinations in 10 days. Should I be be taking Stark to the vet today? He is very playful, sleeps well, is a happy kitty. It is just the soft (and very smelly) stools and now blood that I'm concerned about.
This is also my first kitty so I'm sorry if I'm being naive. Please, helpful answers?
Thank you.

To help firm up his stool, some boiled rice or mashed pumpkin (no spices) will provide fiber.
Tiny smears of blood can be the result of stress, and since he is new to your home, it can be stressful for a kitten. It is blood with every bowel movement that becomes a concern.
With normal eating, drinking, playing, and no lethargy, you can simply monitor the situation. Unless the blood on the stool continues. Then make a call.
Cats have a short digestive system, and with any type of diarrhea, it really becomes undigested food you smell, and that can be quite rank.
it wouldn't hurt to phone the vet's office and tell someone there what's going on. They'll tell you whether or not he needs to be seen earlier. Thanks for adopting a rescue baby!
