Obviously the size of the tank will affect how far it will go 'on a tank', which is why you should be looking at how many miles/kilometers it will go on a gallon/litre of gas/petrol.

An after-market exhaust *should* improve the mpg/kpl, but only if it is less restrictive than the stock one. If you've got a clogged air filter, fuel filter, bad spark plug/wire, or other problem, it will cut into both performance and distance.

Keep in mind that a 50cc motor simply isn't that efficient, and if you are having to ride up a lot of hills, or do a lot of stopping and starting, it will eat into your distance as well.

You can get away with all sorts on a four stroke, but two stroke engines are VERY sensitive to the slightest modifications. Your aftermarket exhaust requires carburation modifications, without which you will get terrible performance and fuel economy.

You already say "it's running a tad lean", so there's your problem. On a four stroke this would be a minor thing, on a two stroke running lean is a big deal.

The answer is to always, on every modification, change the jets in the carb to match. This means if you: Change the air filter, modify the airbox, change the exhaust, change or remove baffles in the exhaust - any of these will require different jetting in the carb.

A better answer is to always leave any two stroke engined bike completely standard, or learn about carburation.

I agree the only reason I can think of for a 2 stroke to run lean and still get lousy mileage is a bad exhaust ! did you remove the baffle ? or is the pipe leaking exhaust ? 2 strokes require back pressure in the exhaust system to run right and a racing exhaust is completely designed to dial the amount and timing of that back pressure to maximum efficiency and efficiency means both power and mileage they go hand in hand! Sure it may sound faster with the baffle removed but put a stop watch to the bike and you will instantly see that the bike is faster with the baffle than without!

You are blowing unburned gas right out your exhaust and making the engine run lean and BTW lean 2 strokes tend to blow up so quit riding it till it is fixed!

sad to say all teens expect to go like a bat out of hell and still not have to pay for the privileged which is what is happening here. two stroke engines are re ally like an engine twice it's size as a four stroke.

the restrictions of gearing and messing with sprockets are when things do go wrong.

so have you messed with the gearing or the rear sprocket.

larger will give you fast acceleration. but it will drink fuel. reducing it will reduce the acceleration and improve improve the mpg so you may need to consider some of these options.

more realistically get a 100 cc four stroke and don't mess with exhaust systems either a two stroke becomes very thirsty if it's exhaust is loud as it has lost it's back pressure as a result.

so you see many things to consider here noise reduced greater MPG. messing with the gear ratio's also can lead to other issues of a greater fuel loss.
