i'm looking for a great system for its SOUND QUALITY, most importantly, and of course my price range (i am a college student heheh).
so, i should include what kind of music i listen to, because i might get a better answer. i want these speakers, because i enjoy blasting (but not like a rebellious punk rock teen) my music. i listen to everything, really.
- i enjoy playing general rock music, especially alternative (like old no doubt, incubus, coldplay, the hives, rancid, etc). i think i listen to those most. BUT, also post-hardcore (like finch or linkin park or deftones).
-i can't listen to rap or hip-hop on my earbuds, but i LOVE to listen to that all the way on some good speakers.
furthermore, it would be nice if it's easy to plug in and out of an outlet, and i don't care if it's an alarm clock/radio, or if it has a remote (but i guess that would be nice). i do have space for most sizes i am imagining. i do like to visit my home every few weeks & would like to take it with me for my down time in my room there.
i'm trying to cap my budget at $80, even $100 (note that i am a college student). but i'm really hoping for no more than that. i'm am truly, truly, truly MOST interested in SOUND QUALITY! ------please please please keep that in mind.
thanks :) i would really appreciate some serious answers

As a rough guide the larger the speakers the better the sound (especially the bass sounds) and larger speakers will be able to go much louder if needed.
Even a set of computer speakers with an amplifier built in can sound very good and computer speakers are quite a lot cheaper than drop in dock type ipod speakers.
A good guide with computer speakers is look for a tone control-this gives you the ability to alter the sound to make it sound better.
The best way to judge sound quality is to listen and then decide for yourself. Visit a store that sells speakers and get the staff to give you a demo. Many manufactures can make claims that their speakers sound good but when you actually get to listen to them they sound bad.
You may be doing this already but try different settings on your ipods graphic equalizer this will give a large boost to the sound quality and again its a personal preference as to what you think sounds best for you
