Hey everybody...My hair is a natural dirty blonde colour but I dye it baby blonde but NOT peroxide. But when i dye it the darker bits always look a tint ginger..how can I prevent it from doing this? My hair is quite thick. Are there any good products I could buy that would do the job as good as a salon...I don't really mind the price but I like to do it myself! thanks...any tips would be appreciated also...

I have the same problem as you. My hairdresser recommended using a "blue" shampoo to cancel the brassiness. I use Paul Mitchell "Silver Fox" and it works great! Although it says it is for grey hair, it works on blonde and bleached hair too.
ALL dyes that lift pigment from the hair in order to lighten it contain peroxide!!! the difference between single process OTC dyes and high lift colours is that single process OTC kits rely on peroxide ONLY for lift which only has the ability to lift 2 levels maximum which is why you are only lifting to the ginger stage. bleach kits contain bleach mixed with peroxide which gives a much stronger lift and can lift up to 7 levels which in turn eliminates all brass / ginger tones. leaving the dye on longer will not make the hair go lighter, it can only lift 2 levels so leaving it on longer will just cause more damage to your hair for no reason. stages of lightening hair: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/8565/shadescu1.... you need to use a bleaching kit like Smart, they in include toners in the kits also: http://www.smartbeautyshop.com/acatalog/Smart_Blon...
I used to have exactly the same problem.
Try when dying your hair applying it to the bits that go ginger first and leave for 15mins before applying it to the rest of your hair. It gives it a head start on the rest of the hair
(hehe i said head start hehe)
Get highlights instead of using dye - it'll give you a blonder effect with no ginger, if they do it properly - i'd definitely go to a salon, they'll do you a really good job, and if it goes wrong (VERY unlikely if you have skilled staff) then they'll fix it anyway - if you get it wrong, there's no one you can blame!
The salon experience is also REALLY relaxing! :)
Sorry but I'm afraid the only way to avoid this is by using a product with bleach (peroxide) in it.
It's hard not to have it go reddish when you dye it. I use Aveda Blue Malva shampoo and conditioner that keeps out the brassy tones and leaves it more neutral. It works really well. The shampoo is purple and tones it down.
