I want to make a oreo truffle... and what I found in the supermarket is CREAM CHEESE SPREAD. and all the sites I've been to were saying CREAM CHEESE only. so, are they the same?

I use a lot of cream cheese blocks in cooking; however, this X-mas was making an old recipe of Shrimp Mousse for my daughter. I had used about 10 blocks of cream cheese and ran out. When I went to grocery store they were completely out, so I bought the spread. The Mousse did not completely set, even though there was gelatin in the recipe. It looked beautiful. When we took it out of the mold, it just fell.........
No, but you can probably get away with substituting them for Oreo Truffles. The spread has a lot of air whipped into it, so you may need more by weight than a block of cream cheese (8oz). Make sure it's PLAIN as well.

There should be some solid block cream cheese in the supermarket!! talk to the manager of the dairy section and see where it is. You are missing it while looking at the stuff the marketers want you to see. that is always at eye level and up front. The main brand name is Philadelphia and is a silver and blue box!!
I'm thinking the recipe calls for cream cheese in its "block" form as opposed to "spreadable" or "whipped" (think regular butter vs. margarine "spreads"). In any supermarket's dairy section, you can find a cream cheese, such as Philadelphia Cream Cheese, in the block form as well as the "whipped" or "spreadable" forms which are usually sold in tubs. I just bought the regular Philadelphia cream cheese yesterday and it came in 8oz foil-wrapped blocks. Hope this helps!
