There was for sure 'no' WWI 'GI Bill' or even a VA (Veterans Administration).
They were of course paid a soldiers pay while in service.
They were promised a post war 'bonus'.
The War ended late in 1918/ 1919....but the conservative US political party in power in the 1920's refused to keep the bonus promise....on the basis that....the government should never be involved in the economy in any way and no government tax monies or benefits should ever be paid to the public taxpayers.....the same being what they termed....'socialism'.
Despite the strenuous objections of this party the 'WWI Bonus Bill' was passed 1924...but...the party managed to win a huge delay....the soldiers bonus money would be kept in a 'trust fund'...to be used/ invested by the party in power for....20 years...no substantial benefits actually being paid to the soldiers till...1945.
In 1932....3 years into the US 'Great Depression' the unpaid soldiers rioted in the 'Bonus March on Washington' that brought out the US Army....several persons were killed. The new government of the other party in office 1933 paid the whole bonus to the soldiers (with interest) by 1936 and created the VA (veterans Administration) for them and future veterans.
So they did get the whole bonus and more but not till 1936.
There was a bonus to be paid to the American soldier following WW I, but it took a march on Washington DC by the WW I veterans to even get the bonus noticed.
