The highest mileage (27city/25hwy mpg) SUV with three rows of seats is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, but it only seats 7.

The only real candidate among SUVs is the Chevrolet Tahoe, available in limited numbers in a hybrid that seats 8, has a towing capacity of 6,000 lbs, and is rated at 21city/22hwy mpg.

The Honda Odyssey minivan seats 8 and is rated at 17/25.

Some SUVs are expected to become available with new clean diesels, which will get better mpg, but with diesel going for 10-15% more than regular gas, that just about wipes out the advantage, and anyway, that's a bit down the road.

If you want to think outside the box, TWO Toyota Priuses will carry ten people and cost about as much as the Tahoe Hybrid, while returning better gas mileage. When you don't need to carry 8, using just one doubles your gas mileage to 48/45.

Try a Honda Pilot or some of the new American Hybrid SUV's Those are the best gas mileages youre gonna get and comfortably seat 8 people.

I wouldn't say good mileage, but the GM crossovers (Acadia, Outlook, Enclave, Traverse), and the Honda Pilot all can seat 8.

if you get the FWD version (not AWD), they'll get low to mid 20's on the highway. That's about as good as it gets with 8 seats

There almost is no good answer to this question. Good gas mileage in my head means more than 30mpg, so you're out of luck already.

Any sport-ute you look at is going to be very lucky to get 20mpg; at least with a minivan you'd have a shot at getting 25-27 on the highway if you drove it gently.

You could try the new 2009 Honda Pilot. It's about the size of a Hummer in my opinion and it does have decent mileage. Check it out for yourself.
