Our 3 year old Great Dane (indoor dog) has developed these little scabs (about the size of a pencil eraser, but they start out smaller)randomly throughout her back and sides (none on her face or legs or underside). They are just very small dry flaky scabs and when I pull them off there are red bumps under them and all the hair and dry skin comes off with it. I have been bathing her regularly and she doesn't have fleas, I have searched her entire body. Her food hasn't changed either. What is wrong?!?!?
Update:I bath her about once a month, and I have been using baby shampoo to bath her. She has been eating Purina One Large Breed for over a year now.

Without a diagnosis from a vet, there is no way to know for sure what they are or how to treat them. What do you feed her? Sometimes these things can be related to poor or improper diet. Bathing too often can also be bad for the skin. What shampoo do you use?
How often do you bathe? Sometimes it can strip the natural oils if it's too often? The body also changes every few years ..a food or shampoo that was ok before may not be anymore. If it's a so called low quality food that could have caught up now. I would review the food see if it has low quality fillers (like dyes or corn) then also bathe less if you do it once a week or more.
EDIT: well if you're certain nothing in the environment has changed, then it must be your great dane who 's internal body changed. It happens to humans too, some doctors say our bodies change every 7 years. Dogs are similar.
Purina imho is one of the better foods you can feed (compared with iams, science diet, dog chow, etc) but if you can, just compare some prices and ingredients. Wellness, Taste of the Wild, and Canidae are some foods that your dog might do better on. Adding in some "human food" that's safe for dogs may also help like eggs, fresh meat (no cooked bones or spices/onions), and green leafy vegetables or green beans are good. Also adding a fish oil omega 3 pill is good.
I have had to deal with skin problems for many years. Unfortunately my dog is allergic to grass and dust mites among other things. She was fine in the beginning of her life though. Allergies usually develop after age 3. Instead of picking at the scabs, try witch hazel on them. There is a product called Dr. Dobias Healing Solutions that is excellent for minor wounds, hot spots and scabs...until you can find the cause.
Great Dane Skin Bumps
Scabs and red bumps sound like a skin infection to me. If it is infection, then your dog will need antibiotics by mouth to clear it up. Since you have such a big dog, see if your vet would write a RX for you to get filled at a human pharmacy. Could be a $4 drug.
Baby shampoo is wrong for a dog. I know it seems gentle, and it is --- for a human baby. Dog's skin is a different PH from ours, so you really need to use a shampoo for dogs. Look for oatmeal shampoo, maybe with aloe. Bathe with cool water with no deep scrubbing. You want the layers of the skin to stay tight and not get roughed up. Make sure your dog is thoroughly dry -- use a cool dryer -- because damp hair can also cause infection.
You could add some omega 3 fatty acid supplements. Science Diet makes a good skin food called Sensitive Skin Formula for dogs. You may try that -- though it could be more than your Purina One by a tad.
Amazing it isn't itchy. I bet if you don't get it taken care of by your vet, it woud become itchy. And itching leads to scratching, which leads to more itching and infection. A viscous cycle.
Your probably bathing to often. Dogs shouldn't be bathed more than once a month at the max. Depending what your using for shampoo can be drying to a dog as well. Danes are known to have dry skin so this could contribute to it.
Using a cheap shampoo, vs a good quality dog shampoo makes a huge difference as well. People shampoo has a different PH balance in it which will dry the skin out faster.
Are the bumps red? Are they growing bigger? How big are they? My Dane was just diagnosed with histiocytosis, and they started out as little scabby bumps and they grew larger. My vet said it could be something in the environment. I would def take Her to a vet just to get it checked out:)
