English isn't my native language, but I do love writing in it. I really want to improve, and I can't do that by sitting on my bed and reading the whole dictionary. I've tried the thesaurus, but that doesn't seem to work, since people say my verbs, adjectives etc. isn't strong enough. I really want to be able to paint a picture when I write my stories!
Any tips? Please and thank you!
Update:Actually, I read a lot of literature fiction, so much even my mother is concerned (who is a big reader herself). I finish a novel every two days or so, and my parents can't keep up with buying me enough books! If you looked back tree (four?) years ago, you would think I was an amateur!

You could read a lot of english books:)
English isn't my native language as well.
I usually improve my vocabulary by reading books. Of course it'll cost A LOT of money if you buy it. But there are some alternatives.
Read classic! That's what I do
Classic novels are now public domain. You can download them legally from:
manybooks.net
Try to read children books first. Such as
A Little Princess
Anne of Green Gables
etc
They're easy. But I find my English improved better.
Then start to read:
Jane Eyre
Pride and Prejudice
etc
Classics are great! They have beautiful words.
Reading a lot helps but you need to highlight the words that you don't know. Try learning at least 4 words per day. Good luck.

the best way is to read english literature. Not only is reading known to be the biggest learning base for vocab, but reading other english works will help you in your endeavor of writing yourself
Try out freerice.com. They quiz you on words and for every word you get right 10 grains of rice is donated to a starving child by sponsors. And you get educated!
Read books out loud and look up the words you don't know the meaning and/or pronunciation of.
I'm not a american. I did some ESL classes to help improve my English.. Hope that helps
the only to increase your vocabulary is to read and listen to others. also there is not much point if you know all the big words without knowing there meanings...
