Or, if the one group does not encounter another group, their language wil become the new language to the new area.
Look at the Romans, English, Mongols (more subtle than you'd think - it's in the grammar), Spanish, and French.
They all conquered or strove to change others to their own ways, whether they were of religion or of their "duty" ("The White Man's Burden" - Rudyard Kipling). Perhaps it was a military advantage.
