I'm afraid of thunder too. Weird though since I love rain and clouds, but both thunder and lightning scare me for some reason. Like if it start thundering at night then I will lose sleep(worse than I already have).

I guess the best way is just distract yourself from it, and tell yourself everything will be okay. I don't know about school since I'm home schooled, but that is all I really do, is think about it being okay.
