depends on what kind of fish it is. if its a standard goldfish, you're probly feeding it too much (as most cases), you only need to feed them once every two days depending how many and how big they are. however, if its a tropical fish, you need to keep the water at a certain temperature, regularly clean their tanks as well as maintain a certain acidity/basicity of the water. if its salt-water fish.. have you tasted the water recently? anywayz, good luck, having a fish isn't as easy as it seems. try growing a plant instead -even a cacti.
well you need to change the water every few days and if your only using a basic fish bowl its good to have a few bottles to keep tap water in them let it sit for 24hrs or so you dont kill your fish. dont feed it too much

There are so many reasons:
*over feeding (causes bacteria and fungi to grow)
* starving (they dont get enough food and slowly die)
* parasites in tank (usually recieved from petstore)
*filter you have is insuffient
*you use water straight out of the tap
*you over crowd your fish
*you dont use a "bubble machine" (causes high oxygen levels
*the fish you have may require a set temp.
* your tank could be next to window allowing overheating to take place
* it could be next to a vent allowing for overheating or hypothermia

Generally fish should live in its Environmemt.when this environment changes fish will die automatically, so check that first.
Fish tank should contain good clean water.
It should contain stones because this will maintain your tank clean.
Plant should be kept inside the tank, this will maintain the oxygen level.
this are some of the ways to keep your fish alive.
