well you can not do any thing to make it last longer . it depens what is worng with starter but isf is your solenoid it should not damege any but if it is send your power back to your battery it could mess your battery up but that 1 of 100 so it is ok but your starter want last long
Out of curiosity, what is it that makes you believe your starter is going bad? I have seen many many people replace a start only to find out it was their battery that was causing to problem.
If it actually is your starter, avoid excessive cranking, clean all the connections, and replace it as soon as possible. When the starter turns slower, it pulls more amps, and excessive cranking can slow it down and pull too many amps, and possibly damage the battery cable.

Why do you think your starter is going bad?
You can disassemble & clean it. Check the brushes. Put a dab of ' die electric ' lube on the ends of the shaft before assembling. =^ )
