Hi guys I got a nice Mosin-Nagant I picked up real cheap. Im pretty deadly with the rifle at longe range but id like to put a nice scope on it for hunting and longe range shooting instead of the old sight but im not familliar with scopes never put one on anything I have always used iron sights. What would be a nice brand that wont put me in the hole. Any suggestions would be great thanks.

To put a regular scope on it you have to drill and tap the receiver and change the bolt. You can put a long eye relief scope on it by punching out the rear sight but not many people make a good long eye relief scope.
Here's the one I put on mine:

oh man scoping a mosin nagant isn't very fun.
especially if its a nice mosin
1, you'll ruin the receiver asking a gunsmith to drill-tap it for a scope base- rock solid industries makes the best scope base.
2, you'll need a bent bolt handle to accommodate the scope
3, you'll probably need a cheek pad/rest because the scope will be high and you won't get a good cheek weld on stock.
as for scope, you're free to pick anything that fits you needs, just that from experience the cheaper variable zoom scopes tend to break in about 10 rounds but he fixed power scopes hold on forever.
if you won't be hunting more than 100 yards, a 4 or 6 power 40mm will be fine.
if hunting more than 100 yards, a fixed 6 or 8 power will be fine.
the problem with cheap and variable power is that they tend to fall apart on the heavy recoil of a mosin- moving parts. fixed power scopes have few moving parts. there's the reticle but everything else is solid. it won't break.
alternatively a 1x30mm red dot or similar red dot scope might be just what you wanted. red dots use a red dot of light (could be other colors) instead of a crosshair. they're a lot more rugged and will never break. most red dots are no magnification, but some have 3 to 6 power magnification. they can be more precise than a crosshair scope, but requires batteries to work.
Is there a Cabelas near you? Check out their "bargain cave" any time between now and mid-Nov. Hunters have already set-up their gear, not quite the Christmas shopping season. The one in Post Falls had several dozen scopes across a wide range of prices, all about 25-50% off.
Go talk to your local gunsmith, even the cheaper $69.00 scopes will work quite well for hunting needs and the smith can mount the scope for you. If you never did one before it can drive you nuts.
