Well if you don't mind being about 45 minutes away from Denver, a great town is Parker. It was rated one of the top places to live by 5280 and is safe. It has many schools to choose from (private, public, even Catholic schools) and they are all rated high. I have lived here for most of my life and it has been a good place to live.
Try looking at neighborhoods in the city proper! They are very diverse, trendy, and all very distinct from one another. If you have kids look into Wahington Park, Park Hill Hilltop, or University area. This should give you easy access to Cherry Creek school (I believe) which is one the best districts in the country. If your kids are older maybe look closer to downtown like, well, in downtown condos/lofts in Riverfront Park, LoDO, or single family homes in Capital Hill or Governers Park.
The best schools are in Douglas County. Cherry Creek are also good, and Jefferson County, well, is HUUUUUUUGE! So, many of their schools are good, too. I used to work in Golden and Liked it very much, Lakewood, Wheatridge, my friend lives in Thornton, and she likes the schools, there.
