Online degrees involve a certain amount of risk. Some online stuff is perfectly legitimate, offered by recognized institutions with a good reputation. A lot of it, however, is worthless. They all claim they're "accredited," but only an expert in accreditation knows whether it's true or not. They all tell you how great they are, and only after you have poured a lot of money and time into the effort do you discover that your degree comes from an organization which graduate schools laugh at and employers won't recognize. Because online education is relatively new, and because there are still a lot of "fly by night" people involved in it, my feeling is that the risk is too great. You're much better off spending the effort at a real, "brick and mortar" institution where the credits you earn and the work you do will be worthwhile and respected.
The best way would be to choose a legitimate traditional university that also offers online degree programs, rather than a college that is online only.
For example, California State University and the University of Washington offer online degree programs, not in every field, but there are some.
