Haha, common question. "What starter should I choose...", very commical. There are several things you have to look at while choosing a starter. One-weakness. Grass has 5 freaking weaknesses, while fire only has 3 and water has 2. But, sometimes they have dual-types, resulting in more or less weaknesses. Next, you have to look at the challenges ahead of you. In the first generation, (as well as the third and fourth) the first gym leader is a rock-type user. Obviously, a fire-type starter would be an increbily bad choice to choose. However, Blaziken, Charizard, AND Infernape are all very powerful Pokemon, and Blaziken and Infernape, as well as their secondary starter forms, are fighting-types, which will help you in your rock-type brawl. Charizard gets 4x the damage from rock-type moves, so be aware of that.
But to get straight down to your answer, here's what I would say would be the best for each region.
Kanto-Bulbasaur-While having many weaknesses, Bulbasaur can learn many stat-inflicting moves. Squritle is also a very great choice. I personally don't like Charmander that much. But, yeah it's cute.
Johto-Totodile-Totodile can learn very useful and powerful moves like Surf and Waterfall, and can learn Ice Fang and Ice Beam to beat it's rival Meganium. On top of that, there are no gym leaders in the Johto that can beat Feraligatr that well. Jasmine might be a problem. Cyndiquil would be second best.
Hoenn-Mudkip would be good, as it's a nice tank and you can catch other Pokemon in Hoenn to help you smite other foes. The other 2 tie for 2nd best.
Sinnoh-Either three will do fine. Infernape is good for offense, Torterra is good for defence, and Empoleon is balanced. I personally find Empoleon to do good, but I would suggest Torterra for upcoming foes.
Unova-I did fine with Oshawatt. Tepig is good for it's dual types, and Serperior is good for speed+defence. I also always wanted a Serperior in real life. Yeeeaaahhh...
Hope this helped :3
