We're planning spring vacation and are currently choosing between Tucson and San Diego. We're leaning towards San Diego because that's where we saw nice houses to rent. I'm familiar with Tucson, but not at all familiar with San Diego. There are lots of cool houses, but I have no idea whether or not they're in nice areas or not. A cool house in the red light district won't be fun...
Any ideas you have on nice suburbs to stay in, or nice areas right in San Diego would be appreciated. On the beach would be nice, although I'm sure it will be too cold to swim. I know my kids will want to make sand castles though.
Thanks in advance.

There are a lot more nice communities in San Diego than there are bad ones. The beach communities are all great. Pacific and Mission Beaches tend to draw the college kids at Spring Break though. Coronado is awesome. Inside of the city limits of San Diego, I would reccommend La Jolla and Del Mar for a great stay.
Also, a little bit farther north are the suburbs of Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Leucadia. These are all excellent places to vacation. Good luck and have fun!!
Hands down San Diego would be the best choice for a vacation, however, it is much more expensive. To rent a house out here is way up there. The closer to the beach, the more expensive. Any beach house is going to be in an area where there are party people, it just goes with the area. Most also are pretty suburban and have nice established neighborhoods. I would stay away from El Cajon, SpringValley, Barrio Logan, - all have good areas and really not good areas. North Park, South Park, Hill Crest, Mission Hills, Del Mar, La Jolla - those are all good areas for the most part. Compared to other cities, there are many good areas and not so many terrible areas. Just get references.
one thing you may want to add is a budget. Let us know what your price range is.
The person who said North park is right on, for a couple. But for a family a little... different. Not a bad neighborhood. Lets just say Liberache would feel comfy.
For your needs (without knowing a price) try Coronado Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Del Mar, or La Jolla.
Those range in average to high end, all are close to the beach or beach neighborhoods.
Chula Vista, is a little in land, but not bad,Imperial Beach, is a nice area too, but not as nice as other beaches.
Really, no real bad areas of San Diego.
Even in the poor neighborhoods crime really isnt as bad as Los Angeles or New York.
There are many of passions to follow in San Diego and this hotelbye is the area to start discovers what San Diego has to offer. In the San Diego holiday you'll stage outside of your rut and you'll discover new activities while you are here and you could just realize that discovering a fresh desire is an adventure in itself. One of many areas must see from San Diego is Balboa Park. That park has around a 1400 acre and here you can find famous structures, numerous museums, gardens, and green space. The park was made for the Panama California Exhibition of 1915-1916. The prevalent structure is Spanish-Mexican model, reduced level buildings that blend in with the organic surroundings. One of the highlights of the park would be the Botanical Gardens and lily lake, the Museum of Man, the Museum of Natural History, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the popular San Diego Zoo. Even if you never enter a creating the park is simply an attractive place.
