A really good poem is by an Australian poet Bruce Dawe.
I have already written an analysis :D
Homecoming, written by Bruce Dawe, describes to the audience using poetic techniques the tragedies of war focusing on the Vietnam War, the substantial amount of young bodies returning to loved ones and the lack of respect shown to these soldiers.
Purpose: The purpose of the poem is to show how war depersonalises its soldier’s and that the soldiers are just numbers, not people. Dawe also shows is hate for war in this antiwar poem.
The reality of war is that there are going to be deaths and Dawe sees the purpose of war is to simply produce deaths. The purpose is also to show that war creates a disappointed knowledge because soldiers fought in a war for no reason as they did not receive a ‘homecoming’ (welcoming).
Title Homecoming/ Irony Juxtaposition/Ironic because a homecoming implies it is a celebration or a welcoming but instead the sad twist is that the homecoming described in the poem is one of sadness, mourning and loss of loved ones. Very different from the universal associations of the word that is a celebration of a return to one's home. This contrast emphasises the sadness of the poem and touches on the readers
motions.
All day, day after day./ Repetition and Imagery/ Repetition is used to emphasise the boredom of the continual activity involved in war as well as emphasise the repetitiveness of the soldiers’ death. It also tells the reader that there are thousands of bodies as the action of sending them home is an ongoing action
Structure/ free verse/ The free verse structure implies that war has no structure, that war is a continual unlimited process not limited by time.
They’re in ..."they’re bringing them home, they’re zipping them up"/Repetition /Impersonalises the relationship between the bodies and the handlers. There are no names used which also implies there is a large amount of deaths.
They’re picking them up
They’re bringing them in,
They’re zipping them up in green plastic bags
They’re tagging them
They’re rolling them out of deep-freeze lockers. /Imagery/It allows us to form a mental image of the actions of handlers. as well as Word choice/ The choice of words dehumanises the soldiers and makes them sound like meaningless objects.
Pick-ing, bring-ing, zip-ing / Repetition/ Creates the idea of a regular production line like that of a manufacturing line.
Hope this helps! if you need any more help just ask!
the poem is called Home Coming by Bruce Dawe
also it should be included in this collection because it is an iconic australian Vietnam War poem! it expresses the hardship of war and even though it isn't written in present times, it still can be applied today :D
