My younger sister (15) got her retainer about 5 months ago and the ortho said she is supposed to wear it 24/7. The first day she had it she wore it the whole day and from then on she has only worn it at night, sometimes she will go days without wearing it at all. My problem is I have the same retainer and I'm supposed to wear it 24/7 also, which I do. It's always in my mouth all the time. I've talked to my parents many times about how she never wears it and they will check on her a few times that day and then they completely forget about it. When we go to the ortho for check ups she lies and says she wears it all the time and the ortho beleives her. and the day before the appointment she wears it all day to make her teeth straight for the appointment. I hate how she gets away with this! What can I do!!
Update:Yeah, she doesn't wear it during the day because she doesn't like to mess with it and it makes her talk funny. But if she wore it all the time like she is supposed to her mouth would get used to it like mine is. And I don't talk funny anymore. oh well....I just hope she gets braces again

Wearing the retainer for 24 hours before the appointment isn't going to do any good. Your teeth aren't corrected in one day. For now I would just enjoy your future straight teeth and your sister's future crooked teeth that she already worked to fix. The ortho will eventually see that her teeth are moving. It may be a long time, and maybe she won't know until she's quite a bit older, but it will happen. My daughter wore hers all day and night for the first six months or so, and then they told her just to wear it at night. Maybe you won't have a long time to worry about it then!
Honestly, it doesnt matter. You would have to wear the retainer 24/7 for the rest of your life in order for your teeth to not move back. I wore my retainer exactly the way I was supposed to. 6 months after I got my braces off I was allowed to only wear at night, and each day during the day my teeth would move.
Basically, what I am saying is that it really honestly doesnt matter in the long run. Its not your place to play retainer nazi on her.
Your teeth will be nicer than hers and eventually you won't have to wear it all day. By the way, I did the same thing as your sister- I just wear it at night because it makes me talk funny but if its really bothering you just remember your teeth will look better and she might have to suffer through getting braces again- that would be horrible.
You can't make her wear it the Only thing i will say is that in years to come you will have lovely teeth and she won't. i don't understand how the dentist hasn't noticed this. I'm 23 and have train tracks i waited years to get mine and i am so glad i got them.
It may drive you crazy, but honestly its not your job to worry about this. You are not her parent, quit trying to bust her.
Shes the one that's going to have bad teeth, not you.
Let it roll off your back, it has nothing to do with you, and its not worth putting so much energy into.
Just tell her that it's really important. My brother didn't wear his retainer and he had to get braces again.
Chill out.
I got my retainer when i was 12 and i never wore it.
My teeth have stayed perfectly straight and white.
If your sister isnt gonna wear it.
Leave it alone.
nothing just remember you will have nicer teeth that her when you are older she will regret it when she is older take great care of your teeth it will reward you when you are older
what do u care? u will just have better teeth then her
