My wonderful cat had a litter of 5 kittens. It's her first and I don't think she's experienced enough to be taking care of so many. They are five weeks old and there haven't been any problems till now. She's so busy she hasn't been cleaning them or herself. Her kitten box is in a constant state of filth no matter how often I clean it. So I separated 3 of the kittens and need to wean them quickly. I know they are old enough, but want to make certain that separation won't hurt them. Any advice?

My litter of five lost their mother at five weeks. She freaked out and attacked my dog, and then came after me when I pulled her away to save the dog. I still have scars from her, let's put it that way.
The answer is "no". When they're a little older they'll start suckling on each other and other adult cats to satisfy the urge to suckle, but they'll stop about two weeks after they start. They should, at least. Mine did.
My advice is to do a rotation: Have three seperated from her at all times, and two with her at all times. Today 1, 2, and 3 are seperated. Tomorrow 1 goes back in with Momma and 4 is seperated. Then the next day 2 goes back with Momma and 5 is seperated. Etc, etc. I'd do it like that, to make sure they don't start suckling on each other as a replacement.
At five weeks old they should not be separated from their mother unless there is no other option (such as a feral mother or death of the mother). A kitten really needs to be with its mother until at least 8 weeks old in order to learn a lot of physical and social skills. They learn to use the litter box and how to interact with people and other animals from copying their mother from around 5 weeks until 8-12 weeks.
The kittens are at the age where they need to start learning to use the litter box. The mother stops cleaning them as often so that they learn how to clean themselves and how to use the litter box. However, most regular cat boxes have sides that are too large for the kittens to get too. Also, if they can not get out of the kitten box, they can not get to the litter box. Make sure that the litter box in the room with them has low sides and that you are using non-clumping litter.
Kittens this age will actually eat the litter because they explore everything with their mouths. However, kittens are just messy as they learn how to eat solid food, use the litter box and take over their own grooming. My suggestion is that rather than separating the mom and kittens (which will stress both mom and kittens) try helping mom out by cleaning the kittens up once in a while. You can get bathing wipes at a pet store to clean their mouths and bottoms, or just use a wash cloth with warm water. This is what I have done with all my foster kittens that I have had this year. (34 and counting).
They will eventually get the hang of eating and litter box and grooming, but they need to time to learn. Just hand in there and good luck.
Let them out of the box to roam the room they are in. I would not separate them. They are at the age were they will learn to use the litter box and all the good habits from mom like cleaning themselves. That is how kittens are messy. The longer they are with their siblings and momma the better off they will be.

Well, actually at 5 weeks old they should still be on their mother's milk or kitten formula. Really, they shouldn't be weaned until they're 7 weeks old. Get them on formula for another two weeks and then once they're ready to be weaned, just follow the guidelines of the bag of food that you buy.
thank you for procuring momma cat spayed. :) i might separate momma cat & infant, for then the kitten makes a speciality of ingesting solids. it incredibly is real that as long as momma can is around, and nonetheless has milk available, the kitten will nurse. in case you separate them for a week or 2, that'll provide momma cat time for the milk to dry (and to recover from spaying, if it became into achieved at the instant).
To the first answer: You dont give your cat back to it's owner just because she attacked you, obviously you dont love cats if your not even upset about it.
