Well, both are hunting dogs that love to kill small critters. they both can be barkers and both can be fiesty with other dogs.
The Westie's that I know are not overly affectionate and sort of independent spirited. Dachshunds are generally very affection with their people but can be very protective of their homes.
BTW, Dachshunds also come wirecoated, just like a Westie, with full beard and eye brows.
As for more information....do Your own research. Pick up books on both breeds, you can easily pick up magazines on both breeds at Petco & PetSmart. Visit the AKC website and the national breed club (West HIghland White Terrier Club of America, The Dachshund Club of America)
Westies all the way! I grew up having Westies, and they are loyal, sturdy, fun, and full of personality. They are kid friendly, outgoing, happy, and easy to train, not to mention pretty healthy little dogs. The breed does not have many common health issues, which is nice to have in a purebred.
My aunt has always had dachsunds, the long haired type, and they are really cute and funny, but don't have the same outgoing and boisterous personality that Westies do. Some of my aunt's dogs had various issues, most of which stemmed from their unusual shape, such as back and neck problems. Stairs can be a problem for them, as can too much playing. They are really sweet, good natured dogs though, but it's sad to see your dog struggle due to their genetics.
I found the most common issue with my Westies is dry skin, which can be helped by using natural moisturizers while bathing.
So, I suppose I'm a bit biased, but I do have experience with both types of dogs, and they're both great in their own ways. Really, the most important thing is going through a reputable breeder, and finding out as much info as you can about the parent's lineage and health. Good luck!
Definite a west highland white terroir!!! I am 15 here old and I have had my westie (zoe) and she is the best thing that's ever happened to me. I got her when I was 7.
Let me tell you these dogs are very loyal, very very friendly to dogs and other people.
They are very proud though and can be stubborn And independent.
They love to be petted but when there done THEY ARE DONE!
