My jaw clicked for years and I also had sharp pain that went to my ear when I opened my mouth too widely...mine clicks once on one side and twice on the other. I was told by the TMJ specialist that the first thing I had to learn to do was unclench my teeth. It is absolutely amazing what a huge difference that made. I never ever needed to go back for any treatment as I am perfectly happy with the great result from the one simple instruction. Braces fix crooked teeth not crooked jaws.
It is your tmj, anytime your hear clicking or popping like that, its coming from that joint. There are many reasons this could be happening to you. A lot of times traditional orthodontic treatment causes this, so if you've had braces that may be the cause. It could even just be a filling or a crown that isn't fit correctly and is throwing your bite off. Your teeth have shifted overtime throwing your bite off. So many things that could be throwing it off.
Its best to get on top of it now before it progresses into a more serious problem. Search for a functional ortho that specializes in tmj disorder, never see a traditional ortho for this, youre gambling if you do, they do not understand tmj as well as they think they do. A traditional ortho messed up my jaw and Im now seeing a functional ortho to try and correct the situation.
Also look into DTR for treatment for tmj disorder, search on youtube, there are great videos of people experiencing relief for the first time in years. Its relatively new and is pretty expensive, but it may be worth it and will prevent you from having to wear functional appliances and braces. Good luck!
Clenching, grinding, and TMJ are all factors of jaw-clicking. I suggest wearing a mouth guard and being more aware of your jaw. I clench mine all the time, even in my sleep, and moreso when I'm stressed. Have you been stressed lately? Try relaxing. Good luck. If it worsens, consult a professional.
See your dentist for advice, you may just need to exercise your jaw.
Try rotating your jaw, open your mouth and roll it round as much as you can.
This can help loosen it up.
