The truck won't start unless you use a tiny shot of starting fluid to start up, when it warms up it fires right up, when it sits a couple hours it won't start back up unless you spay a tiny shot of starting fluid.
Update:It is a 1984 chevy truck 6.2 diesel

Sounds like a glow plug issue. The confirmation of that is the fact that your engine still runs after using starting fluid. If the glow plugs were working you would have blown the pre cups out of the heads and have much bigger problems.
An 84 still had the electro mechanical glow plug controller with an external relay. The controller is a fairly large sensor that stands up off the front coolant crossover. Its got a oval ish 7? pin connector on it. This is the 'brains' of the glow plug system that does the timing of how long they stay on. The relay looks like a ford starter solenoid. The glow plugs themselves look sort of like little spark plugs. You can test them with an ohm meter if you disconnect the wire. A single plug will read in the 10ohm range. Much higher and its bad. The glow controller can fail and stick on which will then usually burn up the plugs.
check out the glow plug circuit.
