well considering Layne Staley's dead, i think soundgarden win by default.. it's not the same Alice in Chains..
Your joking right? this is *impossible* for me to answer. I love them both so much, and they are both the best grunge bands, (yes even better than Nirvana in my opinion)
Soundgarden has the better vocals and instruments, but Alice in Chains has more complex songs. Ugh I cant choose happily, but I'll say Soundgarden because they were the first band to truly introduce me to grunge :)

Can't go wrong with quality songwriting and 2 of the best vocalists in rock history.
I like Alice in Chains better, but Soundgarden's cool too.
